Afghanistan is first and foremost a country of nearly 50 million people — bringing Afghanistan firmly within the top 35 countries of the world by population. It is a young and growing population joined in recent years by millions of Afghans forcibly returned from Iran and Pakistan, including some who have lived abroad for decades. The crises facing Afghanistan are human crises, bringing real suffering to families and communities. Yet Afghans are not without hope. After decades of devastating conflict, the relative peace of recent years is deeply valued, but underneath lies a profound hunger for something more: a faith that brings peace not only to a society and culture, but healing and hope to the human heart. Under the Taliban, Afghanistan has become increasingly isolated, while the space for independent voices, information and public expression has narrowed. Research by BBC Media Action confirms what we see on the ground: when life outside the home becomes more restricted, the media people encounter inside their homes becomes increasingly important. With domestic media heavily constrained, satellite television provides a rare opportunity to reach Afghan homes with perspectives and voices unrestrained and with hope. Satellite television has become widespread across Afghanistan, creating an extraordinary opportunity to meet people where they are — with stories of hope, conversations about faith, and the good news of Jesus Christ. We believe the Gospel does more than alleviate suffering: it has the power to transform lives and bring salvation. We are expectant that Afghans will see and hear their own people speaking of hope, love and grace in the midst of a wounded nation.
